Your consultation and your results come from a licensed gastroenterologist who uses GI Digital services.

Safety comes first

Capsule endoscopy isn't right for everyone. People with a narrowed bowel, some previous surgeries, swallowing problems or certain implanted devices may need a different test. The partner clinician checks this before ordering anything. If you are pregnant, tell the clinician.

Your results, your choice

You receive the full report. Take it to your own doctor or GI specialist, or ask the partner clinician to send it. Your doctor stays part of your care. You just don't have to wait for them to offer the test.

FAQ

Questions.

Anything else? Ask the partner clinician during your consultation, or email info@gi.digital for questions about the process.

What is capsule endoscopy?

You swallow a capsule about the size of a large vitamin pill. It contains a tiny camera that takes tens of thousands of pictures as it moves through your digestive tract. A recorder worn in a belt or vest stores the images. The capsule leaves your body naturally and is not reused.

Why would I need it?

A clinician may consider capsule endoscopy to look for the cause of unexplained bleeding or iron-deficiency anemia, to check the small bowel in Crohn's disease, or in selected cases to look at the colon. It shows parts of the small bowel that standard endoscopy cannot reach. The partner clinician decides whether it is right for you.

Do I need a referral from my own doctor?

No. A licensed partner clinician reviews your history in a video consultation and orders the test if it is appropriate. You are welcome to involve your own doctor at any point, and you receive the report to share with them.

Is it safe?

Capsule endoscopy is widely used and does not need sedation. The main risk is the capsule getting stuck, usually in people with a narrowing of the bowel. That is why the partner clinician asks about your history, prior surgery and medications before ordering the test, and may recommend a different test instead.

What does it cost? Does insurance pay?

The partner clinician explains the cost before anything is ordered. Many patients use this service as self-pay. The clinician's office may be able to bill your insurance where your plan covers the test. GI Digital does not bill insurance.

How do I prepare?

Usually a clear-liquid diet the day before, a bowel preparation, and fasting on the morning of the test. Your clinician gives you the exact instructions for your test and your medications.

Happy Colon Foods has adapted its patient-friendly, food-based bowel prep for capsule endoscopy. Ask your clinician whether it is right for you.

What happens on the day?

You put on the recorder, swallow the capsule during a short video call, and go about a quiet day at home. The recording takes about 4.5 hours on average and never more than 12 hours. Then you take off the recorder, pack it into the prepaid return box and a courier collects it.

When do I get results, and what if something is found?

A qualified clinician reviews the study, supported by AI software, and the partner clinician discusses the report with you. If something needs attention, they explain the next steps and can coordinate with your own doctor.

Who sees my information?

Your partner clinician and the people directly involved in your test. The eligibility check on this page does not ask for your name or contact details. You only share those if you choose to request a consultation.

What does GI Digital do?
